Tips to Protect Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors have a classic elegance that can last for years. Unfortunately, sometimes things happen that mar the finish of a hardwood floor, leaving it warped or discolored. There are several ways to prevent permanent or semi-permanent damage to hardwood floors without having to refinish them.

Spills
Even when it is protected with a stain, varnish, lacquer or other finish, the wood is still susceptible to wet spills. Whether it is just a drop of water or a full glass of soda, it should be cleaned up immediately. Use a strong, absorbent towel or sponge. Blot it dry. Be sure there is no residue left behind. Use a gentle hardwood or laminate floor cleaner if necessary. Avoid using furniture polish on the floor. This will make it slippery. Mineral spirits can be used for stubborn stains, with laminate or hardwood floor cleaner used afterwards.

Dirt
When soil and residue are tracked in from outdoors on people's shoes, it scratches hardwood flooring, makes it dirty and causes it to wear out faster. Place a doormat both inside and outside the doorways to reduce the amount of damage done at an entrance. Sweep or dust mop the floor on a weekly basis. A vacuum cleaner may be used instead if it has felt or soft brush heads. Prevent premature wear by protecting high traffic areas with area rugs. Use a breathable fabric with non-skid backing.

Humidity
Prevent warping of solid wood floors from humidity by reducing moisture build-up in damp areas, such as bathrooms and basements. Open doors to the room when possible to keep air circulating. Invest in a dehumidifier for damp climates. The ideal relative humidity is between 33 and 55%. This reduces the chances of drying out or warping. Avoid direct sunlight on the solid wood flooring by keeping the surface covered or allowing the light to be filtered.

Standing Water
In the event of floods due to natural disasters or mechanical failure, remove standing water as quickly as possible. Temporary problems, such as a hot water heater or washing machine leak can be remedied and the floor may be salvaged if water is removed immediately. Water leaking in from outside flooding may be harder to.

Scuffs and Dents
Periodically check the tips on high-heeled shoes to make sure the nail is not poking through. Keep pets' toenails trimmed regularly. Dogs should have theirs done every six weeks. Put furniture on plastic floor protectors with felt backing to prevent scratches and divots. Periodically rotate heavy appliances. Use a hardwood reconditioner and/or a touch-up kit for scratches.
